Question Answering Demonstration

Intelligent access to information has to support more than access to collections of documents that contain some key words. Assume that you want answers to questions such as:

Who is the author of Atlas Shrugged?
When did Boris Becker won his first Wimbledon?

Current search engines offer very quick and fairly accurate retrieval of a collection of documents that may contain information relevant to these, provided that you choose the right key words. The goal of the research on open-domain question answering is to directly address the problem of finding exact and concise answers to natural language questions presented by the user. This is significantly more challenging than simply retrieving potentially relevant documents. It requires developing a level of understanding of the question and the text documents that contain candidate answers, in order to find an accurate and concise answer to a question.
